A comparative book review is a formal academic paper that considers and evaluates two scholarly books on a similar topic. The purposes of a comparative book review are (1) to inform the reader what the books are about; (2) to identify and discuss the authors’ approaches, arguments, and findings; and (3) to evaluate the contributions that the books make to scholarship.
You may want to use the following example of a book review essay outline:
1. introductory paragraph(s), explaining what books you are reviewing and why the books’ topic(s) is/are important;
2. discussion of the books’ structures and approaches;
3. discussion of the books’ main arguments and findings;
4. comparison of the books’ approaches, structures, methodologies, and arguments;
5. discussion of the books’ contributions to scholarship;
6. conclusion
The discussion of the books’ contributions to scholarship is one of the most important parts of your essay, and also one of the most difficult. When considering the contributions to scholarship that the books make, ask yourself: Why is this book important? Why would other historians of feminism find this book useful? What does this book tell us about the history of feminism that we did not already know? Would I recommend this book to other students? Why?
Before you write your comparative book review essay, it would be a good idea to read an example of a comparative book review. One excellent example is Mary Louise Roberts, “Gender, Consumption, and Commodity Culture,” American Historical Review 103:3 (June 1998), 817–844.
