Women and Violence in Grendel, Beowulf and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

    I) INTRODUCTION: Brievly introduces the three books and their heroines Grendel’s mother( Beowulf), Wealtheow ( Grendel) and Eowyn ( the Return of the King) with a clear thesis statement.

    II) GRENDEL’S MOTHER AND THE VIOLENCE: explain and demonstrate how Grendel’s mother is a symbol of violence and monstrosity and compare it with the rest of the society. Explain also that she also embodies the mother of the original sin since she gave birth to Grendel that represents the ills of the society.

    III) WEALTHEOW AND THE VIOLENCE: Wealtheow represents purity and innocence however she attracts Grendel’s violence. Her role is to be a peace cup as her marriage was arranged in order to avoid a conflict. She is somehow put in a violent world without wanting it.

    IV) EOWYN AND THE VIOLENCE: Eowyn is rave and courageous. Even though she is a woman and not entitled to be a warrior she decided to fight and kill b herself the dragon. Dragon which represents evilness and darkness. A women that kills the dragon reflects the women are hope for a better future as none of the women are present in this book.
