1. Choose a story or poem that we have studied in this lesson by each author. Since there are four authors in this lesson, you must choose four stories/poems (listed at the bottom).
Review each story/poem carefully, and come up with a reading of the story/poem that takes into account the following:
• narrative voice
• structure
• language (i.e., imagery, use of metaphors/similes, striking word choice, etc.)
• sociohistorical context
• theme
2. Research online or in the library for a primary source (advertisement, newspaper article, photograph, poster, etc.). If you wish, you may also use a secondary source (a critical and reliable article, Web site, book, or essay) in addition to the primary source that provides you with a way to make a connection between your reading of the story/poem and the primary source.
3. Write one or two concise paragraphs that explains your reading of the poem and how the primary source that you have chosen supports that reading.
4. Provide an MLA citation of the primary source that you are using. See Research and Documentation Online by Diana Hacker.
5. Carefully proofread spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
