1. Project title: What is the role of community policing in the lived experience of residents of Central Harlem in New York City?
Statement of Research Purpose Community policing is a philosophy that promotes the use of organizational strategies to reduce crime, reduce the fear of

crime, and improve the quality of life of impacted residents through the use of partnerships and problem solving techniques. The perceived role of

community policing in the development of the experience of residents of Central Harlem in New York City is explored.
Project Aims/ Research questions:
1. To understand the perceived role of community policing in the development of the experience of Central Harlem residents.
2. To describe the residents experience with community policing efforts to reduce crime, reduce the fear of crime, and to improve the residents quality of

life.
3.To explore community members? perceptions of the New York City Police Department stop and frisk? program, a community policing program that has recently

come under public scrutiny.
4. To understand how the police view their tasks from the program policies that they are expected to implement.
5.To understand the level residents awareness of their role in community policing programs.

Proposed methods: The dissertation is aiming to review community perceptions and attitude towards community policing through discuss analysis. By reviewing

existing literature on the New York Police Department model of policing and the community of Central Harlem this research will explore the historical

distrust between the community and the police. Inquiry will include postmodern thought, subjectivity, and thick descriptions as parts of the interpretive

framework. This study will use a qualitative research method to gather existing scholarly literature, policy reviews, and case studies of the gaps between

policy and implementation, and by extension, the impacts on community policing in Central Harlem.

This study on ?what is the role of community policing in the lived experience of residents of Central Harlem, in New York City will be used as a pilot

study for future community that intends to measure aspect of community policing.

In this study, the researcher would like to achieve the following objectives:

a) To understand the perceived role of community policing in the development of the experience of Central Harlem residents.

b) T o describe the experience of the residents with community policing efforts to reduce crime, reduce the fear of crime, and to improve the residents?

quality of life.

c) To explore the perceptions of community members about the New York City police Department?s ?stop and frisk? program, a current community policing

program.

d) To understand how police view their tasks from the program policies that they are expected to implement.

e) To understand the awareness of residents to the role that they play in community policing programs.

B. Are individual officers able to describe any training they have received on integrity,
accountability, and ethics? Do they know whom to consult if they have questions?
