Understanding Colour

You will describe the science behind the topic and how it has affected the world around us. Use examples to illustrate your report providing applications of the concept that you will discuss.

The purpose of this assignment is for you present the science pertaining to your topic to a non science reader. You will be assessed for your writing style, content and bibliography. Grammatical errors, spelling mistakes and inconsistent referencing will be accordingly penalised.

The written report should not be more than 3 pages ( 750-1000 words) including references that you will cite within your report. You can use footnotes, or APA or MLA format but be consistent in your references.
You need no more than 3-5 references as this is a short report. You can use a text book as a source, a review article, journal etc. Wikipedia may be one of your references but NOT the sole reference.

You may pick one of the following topics:

Fall Colours, Chemistry of Flower Colour, Bioluminescence, Chemiluminescence, Lasers, Synesthesia, Colour in Metals, Gemstones, or Minerals; Psychological Aspects of Colour ( effects of colour on flavour, colour and health, colour and temperature perception, expressive effects of colour) colour in astronomy ( eg. using light to understand stars), human colour vision, Medical uses of light and colour.

On a topic such as Fall colours, for example- you can discuss the impact of weather on leaves, introduce pigments such as anthocyanins which lend red colour to the leaves, protect the chlorophyll from UV damage etc. ( see link below):

There is also a paper on “Colour of Roses” from the Journal of College Science Teaching in the Moodle site posted early on in the term, for you as ideas for your assignment.
If you pick a topic different/ not listed from above, check with me before you start on the assignment. Your topic should be connected to the course and your writing clear and concise.

Your report should consist of 3 parts:
1) Introduction – You will briefly identify and describe the subject, your rationale/interest why you chose this topic.

2) Science content ( Explain and introduce the science; you can give examples, a couple of graphics/ diagrams/equations if relevant and you wish to illustrate your report).

3) Applications, and how this subject affects us or the world around us.. again you can give real world examples..your sources should provide you with sufficient information in this regar
