TV Party Tonight

    The professor instructions:
For this week’s write-up, (you will need to choose a favorite TV program) to write about in the style of Rushkoff’s essay "Bart Simpson: Prince of Irreverence". You should pay particular attention to how he deconstructs The Simpsons, and what he says is important to understand if you are going to "get" the show.

Take note of the way Rushkoff talks about The Simpsons; he discusses the purpose of the show, the ethos the writers subscribe to, and the methods they use in the show to get their point across. For example, he states that The Simpsons have "satirized us into consciousness" (Rushkoff, p.242) by "celebrat[ing] the screenager’s irreverence for the image while providing a new sort of narrative arc for the sponsor-wary audience" (Rushkoff, p.245). This is in contrast to older style of TV programs that used to "program their audiences by bringing them into a state of tension" (Rushkoff, p.243). The writers of The Simpsons even admit that "[t]he thesis of The Simpsons is nihilism" (Rushkoff, p.253).

Your write-up should be a minimum of 750 words long. You will not need to reference Rushkoff in your essay. However, you will need to reference your favorite TV show. Do not use outside sources; you should be making your own observations about the show you have chosen. Anyone who uses outside sources will be asked to re-write their essay without them. Also, please avoid plot summary- focus more on what the show tries to do, who it tries to target, and how it does the things it does.

Don’t forget your Works Cited Page.
