New World Interested for a Young Girl
My uncle is a radiologist. One time, I visited his office, and I saw him holding a black and white X-ray film under the X-ray illuminator. He was holding the X-ray film in one hand, and with his other hand, he pointed to the X-ray image to show me the cracking area where his patient had a broken humerus. He was using physiology terms which I didn’t understand, but it was fascinating me. Later on, every time I visited his office, he would show me the skeletal system of the human body and tell me that bones build up our bodies and help us to move. He said: “In our body, there are different bones in different sizes. The femur bones are the longest and also the strongest.” While he said that, he also pointed to the femur to show me where it is. My uncle was my first mentor.
Other subsequent experiences have brought me into science. When my grandmother was sick, I visited her at the hospital. During one visit, I learned that a woman patient who was sharing the room with my grandmother had passed away. She died due to drug overdose, because the nurse who was supposed to check her blood pressure and heart rate before giving her a shot, didn’t do that. Therefore, she gave the patient the wrong dosage of medicine. At that time, I did not understand how someone could die while taking medicine or getting a shot. Medicine should help people feel better, I thought. Now, I know the answer: medicine can make people feel better when they use the proper dosage. Otherwise, medicine can cause serious illness and even death. That is when I first know that I wanted to work in the heath care field.
I love the complexity, the intricacy, and how ubiquitous the study of biology is. I had the opportunity to take various courses related to the field of medicine, such as General biology, Physiology and Anatomy and a few others in my high school. At each lecture, a new concept was learned, and a new layer of complexity was added. The more I learned, the more I realized how little I actually know, and that’s where the beauty lies. It’s within the mind-blowing realization of how everything culminates together, working as if some sort of cohesive machine.
