Topic: Milgram and Baumrind

    Order Description
The first assignment involves two parts. Based on the ethical problems which Baumrind (1964) identified with Milgram’s experimental studies of obedience, and Milgram’s (1964) responses to these concerns, identify the issues around which these two disagree. Secondly, you should imagine you are a member of an ethics committee reviewing the ethics of a research proposal to replicate Milgram’s original 1963 study “Behavioural Study of Obedience in New Zealand. Your discussion of the ethical considerations should produce a clear decision as to whether you would grant, or withhold, ethical approval. You should provide a detailed rationale justifying your decision.

This assignment has two key aims. Firstly, it aims to assess your understanding of the research procedure and the ethical issues that were identified as being of importance, and thereby the source of disagreement in the debate between Milgram and Baumrind. Secondly the assignment aims to get you to take on the position of someone who is evaluating the ethics of an application which seeks to replicate the original studies. This requires you to show a good understanding of the ethical issues and make a decision about granting or withholding ethical approval. This decision, importantly, should be explained in detail and justified with supportive reasons and argument. The two aims of this assignment will correspond with the two parts of the assignment which will be labelled Ethical Issues and Ethics Decision. These two sections will form the basic structure of your assignment, with equal marks allocated to each of these sections and a smaller percentage of marks allocated for presentation, correct referencing, and writing style.
