Paper details:

Write an analytical paragraph analyzing how Dylan Thomas uses metaphor and simile to create his theme in the poem written below.

STEPS TO USE:

1. Paraphrase and determine the connotative meaning of the poem (Use TYPCASTT as an approach if this is helpful).

2. Look carefully at these short, but simple examples of literary paragraphs as a quide: Examples to follow. Yours will be longer but this is a basic approach and should help you get started.

3. Having looked carefully at the poem and the examples, answer the question: How does Dylan Thomas use simile and metaphor to explain his theme in “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night”? You will answer this in an analytical paragraph using direct quotes and citing lines of the poem to demonstrate. Focus on what the poet is doing and explain. Re-read the last page of the poetry lesson under the book icon where I added more information on 15-11-12 to help students understand analysis.

As in the last assignment, you are expected to use quotes from the poem. You must cite lines from poetry properly. If you have not been taught how to do this, go to the poetry forum for a lesson on this. You can also look for the Help with Citing Poetry document in this unit. You are expected to begin integrating quotes into sentences.

The “6” paper shows passionate reactions positively or negatively to selection (using quotes) and explains insightfully and in depth how these reactions are produced. Explanation shows sophisticated understanding of textual elements, and makes insightful observations about abstract elements (symbolism, theme, irony, etc.) Makes multiple and insightful connections to personal experience and/or to other subjects, other texts, & other people’s experiences
