Section 1. Begin with an overview of your specific topic and why you selected this area. Then move into a discussion of your argument/thesis. Explain it carefully and concisely. This should be about 1-2 pages.

Section 2. The bulk of the proposal will be a discussion of your sources/evidence. Specifically, explain the documents will you be using to support your argument and how? Remember that while secondary sources are important, the strongest arguments are based on primary sources. As a result please mostly PRIMARY sources. You should also consider which of the other sources might possibly refute your thesis and how you will address such conflicts. 5-6 pages should be about right for this section of the proposal.

Section 3. Next you will want to consider how your argument/thesis has already been considered by historians. Who are these historians, when did they write, and what were their conclusions? How does your thesis differ from theirs (if at all)?

4. When you quote or draw on information that is not your own, use MLA style. (Consult a guide if you’ve forgotten—DO NOT make up your own style of formatting.) DO NOT use encyclopedias or “.com” “.org” “.net” websites. Only use academic/scholarly primary and secondary sources and documents. 4-5 primary sources and 2 secondary sources. Also, you may use academic databases such as JSTOR and Ebscohost to find scholarly primary and secondary documents.

Now, the topic of the proposal itself is Thomas Hobbes’ interpretation/analysis of the English Civil War (1642-1651) up to Charles I’s execution.

According to Thomas Hobbes, civil war or revolutions and rebellions against the ruler or government of any nation is not justifiable.

As a result, the thesis of the proposal or the argument that this proposal should be making is “rebellion is never justified”. In other words, according to the Hobbesian line of thinking, “a thousand days of tyranny is better than one day of anarchy”. In the proposal please explain in section 1 why this is true according to Hobbes.

For section 2, which is the bulk of the proposal, please specifically explain the documents will you be using to support your argument and how. For the refuting part of section 2, please use a primary document by John Locke (you could use his “second treaties” document) explaining why rebellion could actually be justified. This is just one suggestion, feel free to also use another. However the “second treaties” is a rather good refutation so please use it.
