Personal points to make some reflections:
-Sacrifice of one’s life saves many others?point in history
-Lia and family escaped from communist Laos ?I emigrated with my family from communist Russia? I was in refugee camp in Italy? left everything behind?had idiosyncratic English (p.157) when arrived to US? from a high status my family enjoyed in Russia for a communal dormitory living in Italy and Austria
-My grandmother taught me how to use herbs and I saw their positive actions? because of this experience I believe in natural medicine
-Hmong who grew up in world of Shamans and spirits believe that their daughter’s soul or spiritual body needed to move back into her body in order to heal
-epilepsy in Hmong language = when spirit catches you and you will fall
-epilepsy = one main possible mechanism for epilepsy is gene mutation that could cause changes in sodium channel. Prolonged open sodium channel could cause high glutamate release by neuron hyperexcitable and as a result, it will cause excessive calcium release from post-synapses (needs citation).
-Reflections on my life: Lia was taken from parents ? my son was kidnapped at the age 3.5 yo. I had emotional stress until I found him after 6 month. I would never wish to any parent such experience. Acculturation, language barrier
-story is an educational tool for both Hmong parents and doctors: questioning Doc’s and their listening to parents skills
-when I finish reading this book I asked myself a question what is my purpose in life? Why am I here? Their child grown into 30 years old adult lived and died so we all can learn humanity from this experience
-p.163 Dang Moua….trying to nurse from death breast of the death mother? had flash back in the store in Russia two years ago 18 y.o mother walked into store (I was in before my flight back to US) with 2 mo old child asking for food since she did not have a milk because she was hungry? nobody responded to her, looked away ?maybe they only could buy for their family?I cried on the way to airport after giving all money I had to a mother? thinking how many children are abounded and dying in the world of Armani and Gucci
