Students will be expected to use the following format on papers. Font: Times New Roman; font size: 12; one inch

margins; double-spaced lines; numbered pages. Papers must be stapled at the upper left corner. Footnotes: author

and page in parentheses after citation. Works cited: last page. Omit cover page. Write course number, professor,

and date at the top of page one; write your name on the back of the last page to assure anonymity and

impartiality with respect to grading.
The paper will focus on one point regarding your interpretation of the sentence’s meaning. State the point in the

introduction, give reasons to support it in the body of the paper, and recap it in the conclusion. Evaluation

will be based on whether the paper has a point, the organization by which the point is developed (do ideas flow

from those that precede and lead into those that follow), and grammatical accuracy/writing proficiency.

Be attentive to the sentence by listening to what it says; let it speak in light of the larger context of the

passage in which it appears. Be unhurried with your thinking and writing. Take time to experience your thought

process. Trace the specific steps that lead to your more general statements. Get into depth. Reveal what the

sentence implicitly suggests, not just explicitly states. The paper must display clearly articulated thinking.

Say exactly what you mean; express yourself simply and concisely.
