The Media (television, video games, the Internet, radio, etc.) and Education.

To fully understand the intricacy of America’s public school system, analyzing education from a sociological perspective is very useful. For this project, you are to step into the shoes of a researcher and analyze a relevant topic in the field of sociology and education. You must find a variety of sources—mostly primary in the form of research studies published in journals. You may use secondary sources (such as the US Census website) to bolster your argument. Please follow the guidelines carefully.

    Research Assignment
    Prof. T. Capra
    1. Identify your broad topic. Are you interested in investigating learning disabilities, poverty, single-parents, gangs, the SAT, bullying, etc. Once you select your broad topic, you will then go about narrowing it down to a researchable question.
    2. Start the process of narrowing your focus. Create a research question within your broad topic to explore. Avoid the obvious. For example, you cannot research the question/thesis: what affect does poverty have on children, because the answer is common knowledge: a bad one! Instead, find a focus to explore that is not obvious and will allow you to conduct actual research to answer the question. Previous students have explored research questions such as, what programs exist to help children living in poverty, which early intervention programs are most effective, how do single-parent homes headed by males operate, is instructional technology helpful in early childhood classrooms? Do not copy these. Instead, create your own focus. That’s an important part of the process.
