    What do you need to do this assignment?
    1 a qualified and experienced English language teacher who will let you interview him and is interested in answering your questions
    2 a discussion: preferably face-to-face, but possibly by e-mail, or by phone, or by Skype
    3 a set of interview topics, agreed in advance with the teacher

    Ways of thinking about the assignment:
    One way of seeing teaching a language is as handing a tool to the student which they are able to use in a range of situations and for purposes that they decide. The tool is like an object that you hand to the student, but it doesn’t affect them in terms of their values, culture, behaviour, beliefs. This is the “instrumental” view of teaching.
    Another way of seeing this is as an aspect of personal and cultural development. The learner is being encourages to join a community – first, the classroom, but, beyond that, the larger community that uses the language. Learning a language makes learners do things they haven’t done before, develop as people, come across different people they might develop relationships with, comes across aspects of a new culture that they might want to explore further. This is the “values” or “language +” view of teaching.
    You have a list of possible topics to suggest to the teacher, but here are some questions that may also help:
    1 What sort of teacher does your informant think he is, and how did he develop in this way? What influenced him to teach the way he does: eg other teachers he admires, his reading, his training….
    2 Are there any limits or controls that restrict the way he teaches: eg Ministry of Education regulations, the ethos of the institution, parents, students’ own expectations, the teaching materials, the availability of resources, the types of assessment.
    3 Are there any classroom activities he would like to use but can’t because of any of these restrictions?
