Succession Planning

    * “There are two schools of thought on talent development within organisations. The first school of thought contends that talent development is evolutionary and happens ‘by itself’ based on needs of the environment. In such cases, succession planning is desirable but not essential.

The other school of thought is that talent development is a result of a sustained effort aimed at undertaking a strategic choice for developing talent. This involves developing talent on the basis of having a comprehensive, general instructional plan that supports achievement of strategic business and HR plans. Such a plan requires succession planning to be carried out effectively as a basic necessity.”

Prepare a report in which you explore both the schools of thought discussed above, and then present (and justify) your own position.

Provide examples of talent management interventions and succession planning programs (case studies) to illustrate the points you are making. When you refer to an example, provide enough details about the person / organisation so that a reader who does not know the person can understand the point you are trying to make.

Make sure to provide a definition of succession planning in the introduction of your report.
