South Carolina Constitutional Convention

The state of South Carolina has convened its first-ever Constitutional Convention and you have been selected as a member due to your newfound expertise in the variation in state institutions. Your task is to lay out a plan for 3 major changes you would make to the South Carolina Constitution. Remember, that a constitutional convention provides a carte blanche, meaning that everything is fair game.

Directions: Please write a 4-6 page paper, incorporating specific elements as described below. Draw on appropriate course readings to substantiate your argument, as well as the additional
materials that you are requested to explore. Essays should be well-organized and well-written. They should be typed, double-spaced, 12 point type, and have 1-inch margins.

    Guidelines:
In your essay, be sure to do the following (you can think of this as a rubric!):
Have a clear introduction that lays out your goals, with a clear structure after the introduction to support your argument. Your thesis should be right up front!
For each recommendation, be sure to think about the following questions:
o What institutions are you modifying and in what way?
o What other states are doing what you proposed and how is it working?
o How does your proposal fit with the population, geographic needs, and political culture of South Carolina?
o How are you going to sell your suggestion to your fellow Constitutional Convention members.
Finally, in your conclusion, speculate how the changes might impact politics going forward.

Be sure to include in-text citations and works cited. Your argument should be rooted in both the textbook and outside research on the proposals you are making. Be sure to cite
your external sources and your in-class sources.
