Outside of the glamorous city lights of the major cities in Colombia, you’ll find 84 diverse people groups, speaking 180 languages, known as the indigenous people in Colombia (Glasgow, 2012). These groups represent the people that lived in Colombia before it was “discovered” by Europe in the 1500s. It is well-known that the indigenous people struggle merely to survive, with 30% of Colombia’s indigenous living in poverty and 70% of indigenous children suffering from malnutrition (Alsema, 2012). The struggle to survive and preserve their culture has been worsened by the 40 year armed conflict involving the drug trade between the Colombian Army and insurgents. As a result, more than 40% of the country’s84 distinct groups are at risk of extinction. (Rudolf, 2010)
The Baro tribe is one of the many families under concern. In 2008, they had to flee their homes after armed men entered their territory. After a 16 day journey, they found shelter in a run-down neighborhood on the edge of the closest town. They now live under plastic sheeting without sanitation and running water. The Baro tribe has less than 700 members remaining.
Ideally, the Baro tribe and other indigenous groups would live in their collective territories, often in areas rich in oil, wood, and minerals. The war has pushed them out of their lands, however, as they are frequently caught in the crossfire. Once they arrive in the urban areas, however, they often fall prey to human trafficking, drugs and prostitution. (United Nations)The primary enemies the indigenous currently face are violence, colonization, dispossession of lands, displacement due to armed conflict and climate change, stunted recovery and development due to ethnic discrimination, forced assimilation, and cultural degradation. But unlike the conquistadors from centuries ago, the enemies of today wear masks of industry, guerrilla soldiers, paramilitaries, and a poorly-functioning government (Bryan, 2012). If drastic action is not taken now—If Colombia’s current path is not significantly altered, the world could be facing the extinction of some of the most diverse people groups in the world.
