    PART 1A

Govinda is right, Siddhartha has found Nirvana without following a formal doctrine. To begin with, Siddhartha realizes early on in his journey as he reflects on the Buddha’s teachings, that personal experience coupled with spirituality leads to finding the Self. In addition, Siddhartha has learned to listen to and embrace his surroundings.  More importantly, through the teachings of the river, Siddhartha has learned to use his intuition as he revisits his past and present experiences in the material world, while viewing them through a spiritual lens. In the chapter “Govinda,” Siddhartha realizes, “wisdom is not communicable” (Hesse 115). Through this passage Siddhartha makes an assertion regarding his initial questioning of “Buddha’s ” doctrine. He tells the Illustrious One that his teachings do “not contain the secret of what the Illustrious One himself experienced” (Hesse 27). Thus rejecting all schools of thought and spirituality to embark on his own journey.

It is true that Siddhartha has found his own way to Nirvana without following a formal doctrine. Govinda see’s it in Siddhartha purity, peace, serenity, and saintliness in him and sees that he has reached his goal of obtaining Nirvana, for he had only seen this features in one other man the Buddha. Siddhartha has paved his own path on his journey to achieve Nirvana through knowledge, experience, suffering, and love. Siddhartha comes to learn that he will never achieve enlightenment through the teachings of others but instead by experiencing life for himself. In the chapter “Govinda,” Govinda states,” I can see, my dear friend, that you have found peace”(Hesse 149). Govinda sees that Siddhartha has reached his goal, and he himself is still on the journey to enlightenment. Siddhartha achieved Nirvana through his own unique way, through his own unique experiences.

This week we are discussing the reliability and credibility of the narrator Nick Carraway. I think this man is not reliable because of many factors. One is that he is constantly contradicting himself for example when he states that his father taught him not to be judgmental but he quickly judges every character he introduces. Second he is not very close to the characters to know them well enough to narrate a story about them.

Trust is a tricky thing. It takes a long time to build up, yet a very short time to destroy. Based on the first two chapters, the narrator Nick Carraway is not a person that can be relied on. There are a few reasons to support this claim. To begin with, Nick claims that he has, “feigned sleep, preoccupation, or a hostile levity when I realized by some unmistakable sign that an intimate revelation was quivering on the horizon.” The significance of this is that Nick shows he will do just about anything to avoid self-assessments as they relate to his behaviors. In addition, Nick holds no real loyalty to people. Nick proves his disinterest in standing for something when he agrees to join Tom in meeting Myrtle. Due to the fact that Daisy is his cousin, one would think that Nick would either make a mention of disapproval or simply decline Tom’s invitation. Yet Nick merrily joins the couple and shows no sign of objection about Tom’s mistress. Finally, Nick is not a reliable person because he jumps to conclusions about people within 5 minutes of meeting them and acts out on his 5 minute assumptions. Therefore, its not that Nick cannot be trusted, but one should be critical about his words and search for any bias.
