Argument
GOAL: Write a 4-page, double-spaced persuasive argument that takes a position on concealed hand guns on Texas college campuses (my position is we to not allow guns on on college campuses)
AUDIENCE: Those who disagree with your and those are undecided.

GUIDELINES: To earn full credit for this first writing project, there are some features your argument should demonstrate.
1. Introduction: Set up the introduction with a specific lead to draw the readers in and put the issue in a favorable context. It should include most, if not all, of the five basic introductory moves.
2. Argumentative Thesis: As the last sentence of your Introduction, write a single sentence thesis statement that makes your main argument. This should be probably the best and most articulate sentence in your entire paper, as it’s your main position on the issue.
3. Summary of Opposing View: After the introduction, you’ll need to summarize accurately and fairly the opposing view on the issue. This should include credible research that shows you know the opposing view. You should not argue with the opposing view in this section.
4. Limitations of Opposing View: In a separate section, after the Summary of Opposing View, you should explain, point-by-point, what the limitations or weaknesses are of the opposing view. This is where you argue that this opposing view has flaws. You should have good reasons and evidence to back up your claims about the opposing view.
5. Your Understanding of the Issue: Explain your side of the argument and show why your position is better and stronger. You should also admit any plausible weakness or limits to your argument. This is important, as it builds credibility with your audience. You should use your sources to back up your argument here. You need to use good reasoning, examples, facts, and data to show your reader why your opinion is more credible.
6. Reasons Your Understanding Is Better: Before moving to the conclusion, spend some time comparing your strengths to the opposing views strengths and how your view is stronger on balance. While both sides have strengths, you want to finish showing why yours is stronger.
7. Conclusion: Come back to your introduction and bring your argument full circle. Now that readers have read your argument, the Introduction strategy should really make sense. Show the reader why your position will lead to a better future than the opposing views. This should be your shortest paragraph. Make this a strong finish.
8. MLA Style and Documenting Sources: Set your paper up in MLA format. Use MLA parenthetical documentation to cite all your sources and a Works Cited so that you give credit to sources and get credit for your research. You must use at least two sources from Opposing Viewpoints. You must use a minimum of 5 sources total.
