SEC 10-K

You will be asked to select a company that is publically traded. You must research and secure the SEC 10-K Annual Report for the most recent year. This is often available at the company web site. Look for “Investor Information” or “Company Information”. Save the file to your computer for access. There is no need to print as the report is usually 100 pages or more.

    1. Post the name of your company in the SEC 10-K company for my approval in the week 1 Discussion.
    2. Each student must select a different company so read the company names selected by classmates.
    3. You will use this company for discussion in the discussions during the semester.
    4. You will write a 2 – 3 page paper, single spaced, one inch margins, 12 pt font, with double space between paragraphs. Your paper should comment on the financial statements for your company as they relate to the information presented in chapters 13-18 of your textbook, including the notes to the financial statements. ** Use headings in your paper such as Investments (topics from our textbook; other examples would be Financial Ratios or Cash Flow). Please keep your paper to no more than 3 pages (Only include your own writing in this page count. See item #11). The report is based on the financial accounting material in our class through week 3 where topics include the Statement of Cash Flows, Financial ratio analysis, and Trend analysis including Vertical Analysis, a very important concept.
    5. Take care to avoid academic dishonesty. Write your paper, read it, and edit. Use your own words.
    6. Please include a brief introduction of your company as well as a conclusion/summary at the end.
    7. You will also be required to include the Income Statement, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow Statement as an attachment to your report (you can cut and paste directly from the 10-K report).
    8. APA style is required for citations and a reference list. Use your own words! Turnitin will be used by your professor to check for plagiarism.
    9. Ask questions if any of the requirements are unclear.
Additional guidance for your paper and resources:

The SEC 10-K assignment will consist of research to write a paper on an annual SEC 10-K report filed by a public company with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The focus of this assignment is on the financial statements as a whole and the concepts related to the topics covered in this course. You will conduct internet based research to select a public company of your choice from the list of companies included in the Fortune 100 companies, and locate its most recent SEC 10-K report for your project. As part of this project, you will participate each week in the discussions specifically designed to guide you through this project. You will share your experience with your fellow students to learn from each other through discussion postings. There are two deliverables: (1) SEC 10-K Paper, and (2) SEC 10-K Power Point presentation based on your paper. Additional information will be provided by your professor.
