respond to the classmate post toward the poem.

First, I have to start out by saying that I love Maya Angelou’s works. She always had a great way of using metaphors to paint a picture for you. In addition her work is very powerful and inspirational. In her poem, “Africa” I found this to be very inspiring. She uses metaphor’s such as “sugar cane sweet deserts her hair golden her feet mountains her breasts two Niles her tears” to describe the physical characteristics of Africa. This describes the beauty and innocence of Africa in the form of a young woman. Then in the second stanza, she becomes exposed and invaded by many bad things that essentially turn her in a barren land. In the last stanza, she is fighting the changes that have occurred and trying to return to her former self. I really enjoyed this poem because as a woman it symbolized how you can start out so beautiful and pure but become so undesirable due to the pressures or actions of others. It also shows the resilience and determination that so many women have to transform their lives back to their previous glory. The way she turns a piece of land into a powerful, resilient and beautiful woman was just so awe inspiring to me.
