Question # 1
1.) The concept of “Actualization Tendency” is to push ourselves towards growth. By pushing our growth, it means that we want to reach our full potential.
2.) How Actualization Tendency influences the practice of person-centered therapy is by “… rejecting the role of the therapist as the authority who knows best and of the passive client who depends on the therapist’s expertise.” (Corey, p.171). “… serves a primary role to motivate the client to overcome his or her current problems and achieve mental well-being” (Explore Psychology). You are helping the person improve and reject those obstacles they are facing in the short or long term in their life.
Question #2
1.) Fear of Flying
2.) Exposure Treatment
3.) First step: Talking about the reason they fear of flying; what part of the flying they fear the most about.
Second step: Putting them in a virtual reality program to experience a real flight and see how they react during the whole experiences. Showing the therapist what part of flying triggers me. For example, the take-off, small spaces, turbulence, landing, or the whole flight experience.
Third step: Help decrease their fear/anxiety by listing things they could do before or during the flight. Like deep breathing, having positive thoughts, talk about the flying process, listening to music, how to control their triggers if it starts anytime during the flight, and having their goal in mind, which could be overcoming their fear to travel the world.
Fourth step: Actually, going on a real flight that is only an hour or two long so they could face their fear in real life and not in virtual reality. Making them use all the techniques that were talked about during the flight. Which eventually they could do longer flights.
4.) Why I selected exposure treatment over the other option is because if they are expose more to flying than it would decrease their fear of flying.
