REFLECTIVE ESSAY

    REFLECTIVE ESSAY

In this assignment you are required to demonstrate both reflective and analytical writing skills. You will reflect upon,

analyse and theorise the construction of your own subjectivity. Thus, you are expected to demonstrate your understandings ofthe theories
discussed in this unit and apply them to your everyday personal and professional lives.

PURPOSE – HOW THIS ASSIGNMENT RELATES TO

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

The purpose ofthis assignment is for you to develop understandings about how identity has impacted on your experiences

personally and professionally and shaped your subjectivity, throughout your life.

    PROCESS

You are required to choose one aspect of

your identity e.g. gender, class, ethnicity, ‘race’, sexuality, language, disability, lifestyle etc, and reflect upon, analyse and

theorise how this aspect ofidentity has impacted on your experiences personally and professionally and shaped your subjectivity, throughout
your life. Further, analyse and theorise how this aspect of your identity intersects with other areas of your identity. For example, if you
choose gender as the focus, you need to analyse how it intersects with one or more than one ofthe following identities such as class,
ethnicity, ‘race’, sexuality, language, disability. By doing this, you would demonstrate how gender does not operate in isolation from
other areas ofidentity in its influence and impact on one’s experiences or perceptions ofthe world. In your discussion you need to
critically analyse how your awareness ofthis process of subjectification might impact on your role as an early childhood educator, as well
as on the field of early childhood education and the broader society as well.

In developing your ideas, it is critical to link your

discussion to the major theoretical concepts dealt with during lectures, tutorial and readings (e.g. discourse, power, agency, subjectivity,
normalisation, social construction, cultural and social capital etc.). It is also critical that you link your analysis to relevant weekly
readings and to other research and literature relevant to the unit.
