Reflection Essay

    TRENDS IN SOCIAL SCIENCE
As society, social science changes dynamically in time. New knowledge and understanding mean that similar subjects can be studied and theorized in very different ways. Like all trends, however, sometimes older issues, approaches, and theories come back into fashion.
This course considers how social science and social theory transform over time. During the course, for example, we looked at ways in which witchcraft in contemporary South Africa has been differently studied, interpreted, and explained.
Literature review essays evaluate the state of research on a particular subject. They show how different scholars agree and disagree over the best ways to understand certain topics. They also consider how and why those perspectives change over generations.

    Part I: Annotated bibliography

Select a topic to do with society and culture that interests you and that has been studied by many scholars over time. Conduct a literature search to find a selection of works on that topic. Produce an annotated bibliography of 5-8 scholarly works. For each source, you should list its full bibliographical details correctly, then offer the reader a brief summary of it.
Remember, you are looking to demonstrate differences in how a subject has been studied and theorized. It will be helpful and meaningful, therefore, to choose a varied selection of works from different parts of the world and time periods. Don’t choose sources simply because they are the first ones you come across.

    Part II: Reflection essay

Once you have completed your annotated bibliography, write a short reflection essay discussing how and why you think the study of that subject has changed. Reflect on what you think has been gained or lost over time in terms of scholarly and human understanding.
Your writing should be clear and straightforward. As explained in the course syllabus, any instance of plagiarism or academic dishonesty, however small or unintended, will result in an automatic zero grade. Refer to the syllabus for guidelines on formatting. You might consider browsing journals called Annual Reviews for inspiration (e.g. Annual Review of Political Science, Annual Review of Anthropology, etc.).
Work is due in class on Tuesday 4 December.
