Reading & Writing Short Stories

    Reading & Writing Short Stories

This assignment requires you to research critical perspectives related to the short story as a literary form. You should consult primary material (the short stories) and secondary material (critical essays or editorials) to construct your essay. Consider that you need to incorporate quotes from critical and secondary sources to engage with and respond to this material using your own analysis, and that the purpose of a research essay is not only to demonstrate your understanding of concepts discussed in the topic but to demonstrate that you can apply these concepts in analysis and contextualising short fiction.
    Question:

Various critics have attempted to define the short story. Find two perspectives on the short story (only one can be from the Reader; the other must be from a researched secondary source) and consider these perspectives in relation to three of the short stories from your Reader. Do the stories challenge the critical perspective? Or do they agree with it?
