Research, statistics and anecdotal evidence over the past fifty years on the UK construction industry indicate that it suffers from numerous problems, not least of which is its reputation for not meeting clients’ needs. The best construction practices have little value if the requirements of the client are not clearly understood and managed throughout the project life cycle.
The current version of ISO 9001: 2008 standard adopts Total Quality Management (TQM) philosophy by emphasising on ‘customer focus’ and ‘continual improvement’. Clearly ISO 9001: 2008 builds a strong foundation for a TQM environment, emphasising customer needs, employee involvement and making continuous improvements. This leads to the assumption that ISO 9001: 2008 can be a driver for the UK construction industry to ensure maximum client satisfaction.
