Public Speaking/Effective Oral Communication

Observing and Evaluating a Public Presentation
To earn extra credit you may attend and evaluate a public presentation by a speaker. Examples include campus forums where an expert speaks or a showcase of presentations by students from the UA Forensics team. If you have another idea of a speaker, check with Dr. Clark. The main idea is that this is “live” (not recorded) and it is a speech given in public.
    Part One: Attend the presentation
As you listen to the presentation listen as an audience member, but also listen as someone learning to be a better public speaker.
You can take notes if you like, but pay attention to how the person delivers the speech and what the person has to say in the speech. Think about what is effective and what is not effective; what the speaker did really well and what could use some improvement.
Part Two: Write an essay evaluating the presentation
    Include the following:
    1. Report the name of the speaker*, the place of the presentation, the occasion for the presentation (why was the person asked to speak), the date/time, and the topic.
    2. What did the speaker talk about? What was the message?
    3. What did the speaker do effectively in terms of delivery? What was effective about what the speaker said?
    4. What could have used improvement in the speaker’s delivery and the content of her or his speech?
    5. What did you learn from observing this speaker that you want to keep in mind as you prepare for your next speech?
Your essay** should be 400-600 words, typed, double spaced, use correct grammar/spelling/ punctuation, and be uploaded into the Dropbox folder called “Extra Credit Observing and Evaluating a Presentation” no later than 11:59 p.m. the day of your final exam (Date of Final Exam: ____________).
    Tips:
*You can observe and report on more than one speaker in your essay in the case of the showcase.
**For the best grade explain fully your answers fully and make use of principles you’ve learned so far in your public speaking class.
