    Psychology of Intimate Relationships

Read Delusions of Gender: How Our Minds, Society, and Neurosexism Create Difference, by Cordelia Fine and then provide written answers to five of the six questions listed below. Your answers will be evaluated for their quality and for the clarity with which they are expressed.Below are the topics you will address in your paper. You must answer questions 1, 2, and 3. For questions 4, 5, and 6, you may choose which two questions you would like to answer.

Answer all three of these questions

    1. Part 1 of the book presents a variety of ways by which gender influences the individual. Provide three unique examples of such influences. For each, describe the phenomenon and explain how it affects each gender differently. Finally, comment on how these influences (or at least some of them) may operate outside of individuals’ consciousness to influence their choices and/or performance.
    2. Explain what the author means by the term “neurosexism.” Identify one theory about the biological basis of gender inequality that you find most interesting or compelling. Describe the evidence presented for and against this theory. In regard to this theory, which side do you agree with and why?
    3. At the end of the Epilogue, the author claims that gender wiring is soft, not hard. What does she mean by this? Based on the chapters in part 3 of the book, describe three different means by which gender norms are passed down to and picked up by children.

Choose two of the following three questions to answer

    4. Reflect on your own life in light of the arguments presented in this book. How might gender expectations – implicit or explicit – have affected your development and self-concept? Provide two specific examples of this, and relate them to the book. Based on these reflections, what is one thing you might do to help a young child of your own gender to reach his/her potential?
    5. Choose two specific studies cited in the book that you found to be particularly interesting or illuminating. Describe these studies, explain in detail why you found them interesting or illuminating, and discuss what they reveal about the influence of gender in producing individual differences. These studies should pertain to
different phenomena, and should not be part of your answers to other questions.
    6. If you have noticed yourself forming any objections or criticisms about the points made in the book, share two of them in the following manner: 1) present each issue and the author’s stance on it, along with the evidence she provides in support of this stance; 2) provide your own stance on the issue and argue for it by critiquing the evidence presented by the author, providing an alternate interpretation of the data, and/or suggesting additional research (either existing findings or ideas for future research) that might better explain the phenomenon than that which was provided.
