Racism has been a significant problem in our country since it was founded. Racial disparities against minorities still exist, even within the criminal justice system. Racial disparities occur when there is a significant difference in racial and ethnic groups within a society (cliffnotes, n.d.). I definitely believe that social and economic forces play a significant role in this as well. Many minorities grow up in impoverish areas or come from broken families; growing up in these situations opens new doors to crime. The incarceration rates are significantly higher for those of minorities. According to naacp.org (n.d.), African-Americans make up almost half of the incarcerated population. The naacp.org (n.d.) also reported that Hispanics and African-Americans make up 58% of the incarcerated population, yet they only consist of ¼ of the general population. I think the reason this occurs is because of the racial bias that still exists in our country. Many minorities are not given the same opportunities as whites, some have grown up in bad areas or are not awarded well-paying jobs; therefore, because these opportunities are not presented these individuals may resort to a life of crime. Even the minorities that are abiding the law are given a bad image, due to the minorities that are not; therefore, increasing the racial disparity within the criminal justice system.

Because of the terrorist events that have happened over the last decade, such as 9/11 and other recent events, I think it is fair to profile individuals if they are on the look-out for someone who is within that race. However, I do not think it is fair to treat everyone that is of that race as a terrorist, unless they look suspicious or fit the profile they are looking for. For example, if we are looking for a Saudi-Arabian male within his mid-twenties, we should obviously be profiling people within that description to prevent another catastrophic event. This does not mean that we should treat everyone who is a Saudi-Arabian male as a felon, but rather keep a look-out for the individual that fits that description, yet may be doing something rather suspicious or something to stand out.
