PSY 310 Cultural Awareness Paper
Guidelines and Rubrics
———————————————————————————
The purpose of this paper is to have you explore both sides of an issue in the area of multicultural psychology. You can choose a topic from the list below. You will present an argument in favor of each side of the issue, as well as the criticisms of each perspective. In addition, you will discuss the controversial issue from a cultural perspective other than your own and identify ethical considerations related to the controversial topic. Finally, you will reflect on your own beliefs regarding the topic and identify the origins of those beliefs (e.g. family, culture, etc.).
- Is Gay marriage good for society as a whole?
Specific Expectations:
- APA Format: APA Format is strictly enforced and points will be deducted in the event that there are APA errors. Also, be sure to use proper grammar and spelling throughout. Points will be deducted for improper grammar, sentence structure, spelling, etc. If you are struggling with APA and are having a difficult time navigating the manual, please utilize the following website to assist you; http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/
- Your paper should be double-spaced. The recommended length is 5-to-7 pages (excluding cover page and references page). References should be double-spaced, too.
- You must be very careful to properly cite your sources and avoid plagiarism. If you copy phrases or sentences directly from a written source and include an in-text citation but forget to enclose the copied material in quotation marks, this will be considered plagiarism. This is true even if it happens only once! At a minimum, plagiarism will result in a grade of 0 for the assignment.
- You should keep the number of direct quotes down to a bare minimum. Only use a quote when the content of the quote is essential to your paper and you are unable to paraphrase the content. There is no minimum number of quotes; a paper with no quotes is fine. However, you still must cite your sources!
- You must include a minimum of five peer-reviewed sources for your paper (excluding your textbook). This requirement excludes virtually all websites (e.g. Wikipedia)!
- Your writing should be clear, well organized, concise, and free of spelling and grammatical errors.
Helpful Hints:
- Remember that you need to provide pros and cons to BOTH sides of the issue. For example, if you chose the topic of “Is parent-infant co-sleeping a good idea?” you would need to discuss these four aspects:
- Pros for parent-infant co-sleeping
- Cons for parent-infant co-sleeping
- Pros for infants sleeping apart from parents
- Cons for infants sleeping apart from parents
I realize that some of the arguments will be repeated (e.g. pros for co-sleeping and cons for infants sleeping apart). However, I would like to see you try to find some different arguments, too.
- Cite your sources! Whenever you make a claim or present research findings, you should put an in-text citation at the end of your sentence from a source that supports your claim/findings. This is true even when you are not quoting! The in-text citation will consist of the author(s) name, the date of the article, and the page numbers (if quoting). You do not need to include page numbers unless you are including an actual quote. However, when you do include a quote in your paper, you must include the page number(s) for the quoted material.
- Your in-text citations should match your references. That means that all sources listed in your in-text citations should also be listed in your references. It also means that all of the sources listed in your references should be included in at least one in-text citation within the paper.
- Remember that the in-text citation always goes within the sentence itself (i.e. before the sentence-ending punctuation).
