Instead of Interpretive Analysis Number 2, write a 1,000-word paper based on Handout #9 – not the Mark Twain essay called “Purchasing Civic Virtue,” but the David Stratman excerpt, “Is Democracy Possible?”
In your thesis, you will state whether you agree or disagree with David Stratman’s opinion: that war, crime, poverty, and fear of outsiders are solutions for the wealthy rulers of nations, not problems that the rulers are trying to solve.
If you agree with Stratman, then state your agreement in your thesis: “David Stratman believes that rulers use social problems to oppress their people and keep themselves in power. I agree because [state briefly why you agree].” The rest of the paper will be devoted to examples that prove your thesis.
If you disagree with Stratman, your examples will show how national leaders really do try to solve their nations’ problems. Your thesis would look something like this: “David Stratman believes that rulers use social problems to oppress their people and keep themselves in power. I disagree because [state briefly why you disagree].” The rest of the paper will have examples of good leaders who really are trying to help everyday people.
You can also state that you agree, but also disagree, because you have seen some leaders who use these problems to stay in power, and you have seen others who have tried faithfully to help their country. Again, you need to provide well-developed examples to show why your thesis is valid.
You will need to provide examples with facts from newspapers and magazines, and you may also provide examples from history.
If you feel unable to produce 1,000 words, find more examples. Write a conclusion that adds a final point.
