Investigate, explore, and reflect on your own photographs—real
or imagined—as a site for remembering and assembling the fragments of memory. Recall
significant childhood pictures or picture-worthy moments from memory or look at photographs
in your room, home, apartment, etc. Analyze these pictures in a manner similar to the one used
by hooks or Kingston; in other words, write about the picture(s) or noteworthy memory in a
descriptive, reflective way that considers the relationship between the photograph(s), the
photographer (if one can guess who that person might be), and the viewer or audience gazing at
the image. Pay attention to any thematic and representational patterns in your photo (real or
imagined). What narratives emerge as a result of this type of rereading or rhetorical vision and
reflection? How are these interpretations informed by your present identity and location? How
do these narratives contribute or resist dominant narratives about family? (Please note: Unlike
the writers you encounter in Rhetorical Visions, for instance—hooks, you should not use
deliberate fragments. Make sure that your sentences are complete and grammatical.)
