philosophy of nursing

This final assignment allows you to reflect on how you might integrate your chosen human science nursing theory into your future practice.  In this assignment, you will demonstrate your understanding of your chosen human science nursing theory by discussing the main aspects of the theory and then applying the theory to a case study. Also discuss how your thinking and pspectives have changed over the 12 weeks of the course. You also will discuss why you chose the specific human science nursing theory that you explored in depth within the course.

Imagine that you are the advanced practice nurse in palliative care who is called to work with Mr. and Mrs. Ryan, the family in the case study in Module Three.  Consider what your practice should look like in this scenario when informed by your chosen human science nursing theory.  So do not simply write about what you would typically do, even if you believe that you currently practice from a specific theoretical perspective.  Rather, use what you have learned so far about the theory and document a detailed description of how your practice should be in this situation, including anticipated outcomes that might arise when practicing from that theoretical perspective, e.g., Mr. Ryan revealed his deepest fear.  Ensure that your actions, behaviours, language, and so forth are consistent with what would be expected for your chosen human science nursing theory.  Identify the fit between your practice and the theory by indicating appropriately in brackets, e.g., if practicing from Watson’s approach then when writing about encouraging Mrs. Ryan to share her negative feelings you could write (caritas #5), but do not provide references – the aspects of the theory should have been detailed earlier in your paper and references are needed then.  Including references as you document your practice in relation to the case study would disrupt the flow of your writing at that point.  First person should be used when documenting your consult.  Your paper will be no more than 12 pages double-spaced (excluding cover sheet and references).  APA format is required.  Please name your file by your name, e.g., “FP Caroline S.docx”.  Do not submit your assignment as a pdf document.  The paper must be submitted to the Course Director by 9.00am EST on Monday, December 3, 2012.  Your grade will reflect the extent to which you meet the following criteria:

    •    Clearly identified human science nursing theory.
    •    Relevancy and clarity of description of chosen human science nursing theory: need to name theory (remember to use appropriate reference/s), provide main points/ideas, principles, etc.
    •    Level of critique about why you chose the specific human science nursing theory; must include how it fits with your philosophy; clarity of framework for thinking and acting, i.e., consideration of ontology, epistemology, and methodology within personal philosophy; could also identify reasons why other theories did not fit as well.
    •    Fit between description of practice and case study content; attention paid to participants in case study; attention paid to physical and psychosocial aspects in case study, as appropriate.
    •    Congruency between what you pay attention to, how you pay attention to it, and what the theory suggests: need a detailed description of how you will be with the person/family as directed by your chosen theory; what you will focus on in the situation, how you will act and speak, and what priorities will be of interest as you consider how you will nurse in this situation.
    •    Congruency between theory and content of description, including the words used to detail the consult, i.e., language used should be that of chosen human science nursing theory.
    •    Congruency between chosen theory and anticipated outcomes of consult.
    •    Coherence, flow, and clarity of paper; relevant and accurate use of headings; accurate citation of references according to APA; follows APA format, e.g., header, spacing, etc.
Discussion of how your thinking about nursing and philosophy have changed throughout the course
