Pharmacology CASE STUDY: Practitioner privileges and responsibilities

The privileges and responsibilities of nurse practitioners vary from state to state so it is important for you to understand the specific parameters of the state(s) where you will practice. Take some time over the next few weeks to research the nurse practice act that governs your state (or any other state where you plan to practice). This assignment will entail reviewing your specific state’s Nurse Practice Act, reviewing your board of nursing’s website and/or contacting the Advanced Practice Representative from your state.
Beginning this process early will facilitate your understanding of your specific prescriptive role as a Nurse Practitioner. This week, you will be asked to submit the results of your research that covers the following:
    • Describe the licensing and certification requirements of a nurse practitioner in your state? state of Maryland
    • Describe Nurse Practitioner prescription-writing privileges in your state.
    • Describe your state’s specific requirements regarding physician affiliations agreement. Many states have collaborative agreements, others have supervisory relationships and others have independent practice.
    • Identify your states regulation on narcotic prescription for the nurse practitioner prescriber. If your state allows for narcotic prescription how and when do you apply for your DEA number?
    • Identify what an NPI number is and how you will obtain it.
You will need to maintain this information for future courses.
Submit your answers in a Microsoft Word document (maximum of 4 pages).
Submit your document to the W8: Assignment 4 Dropbox by Week 8, Day 6.
