Performance Management Coursework (CW 2): 360-degree feedback
Task: Using your notes from the relevant lecture and workshop prepare:
‘A proposal for introducing 360-degree feedback’.
The coursework must be written in two parts: Part 1 should introduce a critical discussion of MSMR research, and include a review of the current recommendations regarding design and methodology of 360 programmes, together with any pertinent case studies and findings that you have chosen to inform your practical work. Part 2 must be written for your client and re-introduce, albeit briefly, any relevant issues raised within Part 1.
Part 1 – Critical Academic Discussion:
Conduct a critical academic discussion of the theoretical, conceptual and methodological issues of multi-source-multi-rater feedback and its design that you deem relevant to this proposal, that forms the basis of your work and has informed your thinking. For example, you could include a historical theoretical overview of the problems of traditional appraisal and hence the development of multi-source-multi-rater techniques; a review of 360 best practice guidance, with your own analysis of the advantages/disadvantages of various design points. The aim of Part 1 is to provide an opportunity for you to develop and demonstrate your underpinning knowledge of 360-degree feedback from a theoretical as well as an applied perspective. It must therefore be written as an academic piece of work.
Part 2 – Client Report:
1. Clearly present the work context, which can either be the DOH as discussed in the workshop or your own organisation, if preferred. If you choose the latter, please ensure you meet the requirements that apply to all practical work with real clients (included again below, at the end of this briefing).
2. Describe your proposal, which outlines your proposed design and implementation of a 360-degree feedback process for either the 300 senior managers in the Department of Health (DOH) or for senior managers in your chosen organisation.
3. The solution you propose must be practical and include workable suggestions relevant to your chosen organisational context. It must be written for the client, i.e. the staff development unit (SDU) in the DOH, or the senior personnel manager in your organisation.
4. The recommendations that you propose for your client must reflect the most up-to-date theory regarding 360, and be referenced as such. In addition, they must be practical & workable suggestions relevant to your organisational context. You should also outline any potential implementation issues or problems you would possibly encounter and how you would proceed.
5. Key points raised within Part 1 could be re-introduced but in a manner that the client can understand. The practical account should be linked to issues raised within Part 1 where relevant.
Self-evaluation:
1. As a separate attachment, formulate an evaluation of your work together with recommendations should this work be replicated.
2. Please include your Self Learning Analysis: Writing from a reflective-practitioner perspective, your self-learning analysis should contain the main aims of your work together with a brief overview of the step-by-step processes involved. You should reflect upon your actions by noting what you have learnt from the experience, including additional comments on how you planned the work, together with an evaluation of theory/knowledge that you applied to the process (this could include those acquired from the workshop) together with skills/knowledge you have acquired as a result of this work that can be applied to future professional practice.
Please note that the coursework will be marked as one piece of work (i.e., there will be NO separate marks allocated to part 1 and part 2) and will contribute 50% towards your final grade for this module OVERALL.
Coursework format
Two complete copies of the coursework should be submitted on white A4 paper and typed. Maximum word count: 4,000 words, excluding self-learning analysis and references (a full reference list must be provided for any citations).
The assignment should include a Title page, an exec summary, a contents page, the two sections of the report, references, self-learning analysis, and any relevant appendices. You do not need to include any costings or a project plan, but do please include relevant example ‘pro forma’ materials required to introduce and run the 360-degree feedback programme.
