People in Organisation

The module this termprovides you with the opportunity to develop your skills focussing within the ‘Management’ and ‘Human Resources’ contexts. The method of development and assessment for the module will be the creation of an individual portfolio, submitted after the end of the module. This individual portfolio of work is weighted at 100% of the module coursework. To pass this assessment you need to achieve at least 30% of the marks in each of the 4 sections identified below and achieve at least 50% overall for the assessment.
    Teamwork
It is envisaged that students will work in self-formed teams of 4 or 5 (no less than 4 and no greater than 5), over the duration of this module. This will allow you to develop a number of skills that can be transferrable to use in other modules on the course and are essential in the workplace. This will allow you to work as a team to undertake the tasks that will be given throughout the module. The teamwork that you devise, whether it is presentations, interactive sessions etc. will be included as evidence of your team work, and is included in the ‘summative’ assessment at the end of the module.

    Assessment
There are two forms of assessment that will be used during the module. On a weekly basis, you will gain ‘formative feedback’ which will be derived to aid your learning. This feedback is not recorded against your records, but is to be used by you to improve your work further. This feedback will be gained from your tutors and peers. The second form of ‘summative feedback’ will be the grade and feedback gained from the work you will submit at the end of the module.

For this module, the ‘summative assessment’ is an individual portfolio, which you will submit at the end of the module. This portfolio will be built up with four sections: (1) Literature Review, (2) a descriptive statement of the work you are including, followed by the evidence of teamwork you have presented over the Term in the module, (3) Reflective Traffic Light sheets and (4) a personal reflection on how youactually worked as a team member.

    Section 1: Literature Review
You are to review (not list) the contemporary literature on one specific aspect of one topiccovered in the module as part of this section of the assessment. You are required to research and explore further this one aspect of a topic that will be discussed in the lecture programme (see the ‘module content’). It is expected that you critically analyse and evaluate this topic and make sound arguments why the theories, models and/or concepts you have identified are effective or otherwise. It is suggested that you should compare and contrast two authors’views inyour aspect in the chosentopic. This review of the literature should be a maximum of 2,000 words – state the words you have actually used in this section on the first page. This element of the assessment can be started immediately. For information – ‘recruitment’ and ‘selection’ are two different topics – if you are going to use ‘recruitment’ as one of your topics, you cannot use ‘selection’, and vice versa.
The topic areascovered in the module and available are:
    Teams
    Groups
    Implications of management
    Negotiation
    Recruitment
    Selection
    Induction

For example, you may choose ‘negotiation’ as your topic, so one aspect of this could be comparing and contrasting two authors views discussing ‘win-win’ strategies.

Section 2: Evidence of teamwork tasks
There will be 7 tasks that you will perform over the duration of the module. Of these 7, you are expected to include at least 6 of these in the portfolio that will provide the evidence that you have interacted and participated in the team work sessions during the module. This will include any notes or documentation that you have created as a team, and you will submit these as elements in your individual portfolio. Initially, you should create a descriptive statement identifying what work is,and why it is included in the portfolio. This descriptive statement is a separate, individual piece of work with a word limit of 500 words, and will cover all of the tasks you have included (not 500 words each task!). State the number of words used at the bottom of the descriptive statement.

Theother included evidence in the portfolio are on-going and are ‘team’ elements. In your teams of 4 or 5, you will collect and collate your evidence of your team work across this module in this Term. This is the only module where you are allowed to copy others’ ‘Section 2’ of the portfolio for your group – ensure each person in your team has an identical copy of the work that you as have created (e.g. PowerPoint slides, accompanying notes etc.). It is your responsibility, as an individual to ensure this work is complete. When the work is marked, each team (of 4 or 5) will be assessed to ensure all of the Section 2 are identical, but with a different 500 word descriptive statement as outlined above; if the evidence is different, then you will not have met the learning outcomes for this section; in addition, if you do not state the word count used in the 500 word descriptive statement, you will also lose marks. This work will be developed across the Term.

Section 3: ‘Traffic Light’ reflective aid sheets
It is advised that each student completes a ‘Traffic Light’ reflectiveaid each week, ideally during (or just after) the lecture – see example attached. This way, any issues (positive or negative) can be captured after it is experienced, and not identified or remembered after a number of weeks. This will enable you to construct your essay on ‘how you worked as a team member’ (in Section 4). From each of these ‘Traffic Light’ reflectiveaids you will create over the 10weeks, a number of themes or issues may have arisen that you may want to ‘reflect’ upon in the essay in Section 4, discussed later. There is an expectation that there should be at least 8 fully completed‘Traffic Light’ reflectiveaids includedin Section 3.

The ‘Traffic Light’ reflective aid is split into three areas; red, orange and green, and each of these are divided into ‘Description of the experience or event’ and ‘Improvements / plans / developments (analysis and evaluation)’.

    Green area
This part of the aid is to be used by you to identify those areas where you feel that you have a full understanding of the experience or event, and can easily apply this experience in all situations.

The ‘improvements / plans / developments (analysis and evaluation)’ section should be used by you to suggest how your learning and / or skills can be enhanced or developed further.

    Orange area
This area is similar to the green area, identified above. Here, you will suggest the experiences or events where you had some difficulty in understanding, or some difficulty in applying these to some situations.

The ‘improvements / plans / developments (analysis and evaluation)’ section should be used to suggest how you can overcome these areas to develop your learning and / or skills further.

    Red area
This area is opposite to the green area. In this section you need to identify those experiences and events where you had considerable difficulty and found it difficult to apply these to practical situations.

The ‘improvements / plans / developments (analysis and evaluation)’ section should be used to suggest what plans you intend to implement to overcome these issues and so to improve and develop your learning.

So, for in each of the areas (green, orange or red), there may be a number of issues or skills that you may want to reflect upon. For each of these ‘issues’, there should be a corresponding improvement, plan or development.

Although ‘bullet points’ are frowned upon in the Birmingham City Business School, it is OK to use these in the ‘Traffic light’ reflective aid sheets.

There is no word count for this section.

Section 4: How you worked as a team member
Over the duration of the module, you will be working as an activemember, working in your self-formed teams. For this section of the portfolio, you are to include ‘how’ you worked in the group – you may want to reflect on the skills you have developed, or how you have developed as an individual – this is not pure description of what you did (the tasks), it is about you, how you have developedyour skills and to evaluate the ‘process’ you used. You should undertake additional research to underpin and justify your views and use the ‘Traffic light’ reflective aid sheets(included in Section 3) to aid this reflection.

Reflection is really about helping you to gain the maximum benefit from a situation. If, however you do not take time to consciously consider how you are adapting to any new situation, what it requires of you and how you have developed personally through the different situations then you may not be able to make the most of your time.

‘Consciously’ has been highlighted in the paragraph above as many of you will say that you do not reflect on what has happened to you but this tends to happen in an unconscious way. By taking a more systematic approach you will be able to make more active and aware of decisions about what you have learned, whether it is in your academic or personal lives. Conscious reflection will enable you to evaluate ideas and make choices about what you might do in different situations. In many ways, reflection helps you to take control of what is happening. This reflection essay should be a maximum limit of 2,000 words, and the number of words used should be stated on the last page of this section. It is suggested that section 4 should be completed at the end of the module.

Finally, to pass this module, you need to achieve at least 30% in each of the 4 sections (i.e.at least 8% in each section). If you do not reach 30% of the marks in each of the 4 sections, you will not pass the module, irrespective of the final grade you attain in this module. All sections need to be attempted to achieve a pass overall.
