What are the words in the text that make it a very special text? How do we interpret the symbols in the text? What are the stylistic features of the text? How does the author’s use of language help us to understand the themes? These are some of questions we ask when doing textual analysis. We also mentioned the author-text-reader model. When we look at this model more closely, we find that we’re actually trying to understand the text in a context concerning its production and reception. It’s almost impossible to discuss the meaning of a symbol without considering its context. In terms of a literary work, analyzing its historical and cultural context also help us to understand the text better.
The historical and cultural context of a literary text has two layers of meaning. When you start to think about the projects that you need to accomplish for this inquiry, you need to think about these two layers and decide what your approach is. First, the historical and cultural context outside the text. When was the text produced? What are the characteristics of this time period? Who is the author? What is his/her cultural background? Does that influence how he/she writes? What evidence of this influence we can find in the text? Here, we are concerned about the reflection of the historical and cultural framework of the text’s production in the text itself. Second, the historical and cultural context inside the text. When did the story happen? What were some of the most important events in that period? How much has our culture changed over the time? What do the characters in the story tell us about the historical moments or cultures that they lived in? For inquiry two, you can focus on both layers and their relations in the text

    1. The first research question that I think I am interested in is how the Native American culture defines the nature or the animals. This question is the first question after I read the book; many chapters are talking about the nature in different aspects of their culture.
    2. The second research question is how the Native American culture affects her writing style. This book is basically talking about her life and some stories that she heard before. It is some Native American story.
    3. The last question is this book reminds me the Ecocriticism, I think I will do some research about the relation between this book and the Ecocriticism, and how it appears on the text.
