    TOPICS
    1. Cultural Knowledge: How can music be experienced and explained differently according to “insider” and “outsider” knowledge?
    2. Value Systems and Hierarchies: Certain music can sometimes be presented by the hegemonic power of a society, or by the hegemonic power of an individual, or by the hegemonic power of certain class/a group of people in a society. Can you find any musical genre from the class that explains this case?
    3. Music and Identity: People in certain society often play music to present their identity—racial/ethnic identity, gender identity, social identity or national identity. Can you find any musical genre that presents explicitly certain identity?
    4. Music and Spirituality (Religion, Spirituality, and Transcendence in Music): Music often plays an important role in religious or spiritual rituals (both secular/sacred). Sometimes in those rituals, music itself sometimes becomes the tool for healing as well. Were there any musical genres that you encountered in the class that relate to this context?
    5. Music and Politics (Ideology): Music plays an important role in politics. Can you find any example from the musical genres we have learned so far?
    6. Music and the Environment: The reason that certain music was played in a certain culture was closely related to the people’s living style and the environment of the people. For example nomadic people were never able to use a heavy instrument in their music. Consequently, they produced a lot of vocal music. Can you find any musical genre related to environment?
    7. Music and Gender: In certain musical cultures, gender can be the main prism through which music can be understood. For example, what might be the reason for Rock music having been made so masculine in this society? Is there any musical genre that can explain by a gender specific approach to understanding?
    8. Musical and Cultural Change (Exchange and Adaptation, Music Technologies and Media, Cultural intersections): We are living at the constant moment, and things are changing all the time. Music is no exception. Music has been changed, according to different times and places. The recent emergence of technology has considerably impacted the musical scene. Can you explain any musical genre from our class in this context?
    9. Transmission and Pedagogy: Musical knowledge and skills can be learned and taught in various ways. Certain music was learned through apprenticeship, while some musical genres have been taught exclusively either aurally or by notation. Have any of the genres we have learnt about in class been explained in a unique/different way of teaching or learning?
    10. Music and the Other Arts: Music is often presented with other arts in certain genres. Theatre genres present not only music but also in the use of art, literature and dance. If there is any musical genre that can be explained not only by the music but in relation to other kinds of arts such as dance, arts, literatures, explain it in your essay.
