Module 5: discussion

Social Problems in the News: Race/Ethnicity

For your initial post, find a news article published that discusses the effects and consequences of unemployment. Consider looking at the following sources listed below. You can access these sources from the . If you need support accessing these sources, refer to . If you select a different source than one listed below, remember to include a PDF of the article instead of a link to ensure your peers can view it.

    • Wall Street Journal
    • The Washington Post
    • The New York Times
    • The Chicago Tribune
    • USA Today
    • The Economist

In your post, summarize the article. If your news source uses academic research or government data, state the research or data that it uses and briefly describe what it means. In your opinion, how does adding in race/ethnicity shape this social problem? Next answer the following question: How can being aware of the definitions and differences between prejudice, discrimination, and racism help to solve race/ethnicity as social problems? Why might sociologists be interested in particular racial or ethnic groups depending on what social problem or social topic they are researching? In your response post, respond to two peers who selected a different social problem than you did. Do you agree with your peer on how race/ethnicity shapes this social problem? Why or why not? How would you add to or change to your peers response? What other factors besides race/ethnicity do you think would also shape this social problem? Why do you think that factor would also shape the social problem?
