Close reading on Milton Paradise lost.
Focus on finding either a simile or a metaphor in one of our recent readings (post-midterm). Examine the details of the metaphor in detail (what is the tenor, what is the vehicle, what are the dimensions). When examining the vehicle and trying to come up with the dimensions, use the idea of symbolic polyphony to expand your discussion: what are the various "voices" that a particular vehicle can produce?

A reminder about symbolic polyphony: The phrase, "symbolic polyphony" is used by psychoanalyst, Jacques Lacan, to describe the multiple meanings, assiociations, connotations, and connections that can be produced by language, by symobols. Close reading should alwyas been attentive to such polyphony while also trying to work through how a particular symbol (a word, a metaphor, an instance of personification) adds to the large rargument of a text (remember Swift’s description of a rain shower)
