mental illness and homeless
Sociology
Paper instructions:
1.Discuss your view as to a family’s responsibility to care for someone who has a severe mental illness and is homeless. Should they take the person into their home to care for him or her? What are the arguments for doing so or not doing so? What are the implications for the homeless person? If a family chooses not to take a mentally ill family member into their home, what are the implications for the person? What are the implications for society?
2.Consider or not whether you believe that individuals with mental illnesses have the right to refuse to take their medications (unless by doing so they would be harmful to themselves or others)? Do agencies have the right to withhold services to those who refuse to take their medication? How does this question apply to the homeless population? Why is this an important question for the homeless population? What are the implications for the relevant community?
3.Describe the series of deinstitutionalizations that took place from the early 1950’s through to the 1980’s. Discuss the impact and results on the homeless population during those different time periods. Do you agree with the current laws regarding institutional stays for persons suffering from mental illnesses? Are these laws in the best interest of the homeless population? Explain why or why not.
