    Media Review Paper

NOTE: This research paper is different from others you may have written. The paper should be a focused effort to analyze 5 concepts from your Psychology textbook and one research-based journal article.  Choose a book or film to use as a backdrop to tie the concepts and research article together in a coherent paper.

    Media Review Paper

This assignment provides an opportunity to apply psychological theory in the exploration of a book or film.  Choose a film or book of special interest to you. Make sure the book or film has content that can be meaningfully explored through application of psychological theory and research. You might want to look ahead at some of the later chapters in your text that deal with emotion, motivation, personality, the development of the individual over the life span, health and stress, and psychological disorders and treatment, so that you have a more complete idea of the different concepts that might apply.

For example, you might pick a movie or book in which the main character suffers from some psychological disorder, or perhaps is merely trying to cope with the everyday stressors of life. You might discuss the kinds of defense mechanisms this person uses, or perhaps refer to developmental stages in the person’s life that might have been important, or discuss the effects of abuse, alcoholism and addiction, etc. You can approach the subject matter from different perspectives—psychoanalytical, biological, behavioral, cognitive, and/or sociocultural. You could discuss the role emotion, memory, or motivation plays in the character’s development, or the importance of the environment, and such influences as racism and sexism.

So, think of the 5 psychological concepts as different concepts or topics we have studied this semester.  For instance, if your character suffers from schizophrenia, then schizophrenia (its causes and symptoms) could be one concept or topic (from the chapter on Psychological Disorders).  You could discuss therapy as another concept (from the chapter on Treating Psychological Disorders) and how this applies to your character. Another topic or concept could be substance abuse (discussed in the chapter on Consciousness), etc.  The main thing is showing us what you have learned from reading your Stangor textbook about each of these concepts or topics. What does  the research say concerning these topics?
Click here to have a similar A+ quality paper done for you by one of our writers within the set deadline at a discounted….Provide the Chapter and Section numbers (or page numbers) where the concepts can be found and the names of researchers associated with these concepts. Simply quoting a sentence from your Stangor textbook about each concept or topic will not earn full credit.  Read the pages that pertain to your topic and summarize it, then apply what you have learned from your reading to the film you have selected.  You may select concepts that we did not cover if you wish, as long as they are discussed in your textbook.

So, the film or book provides only the backdrop for your research on the 5 psychological concepts.

For the one journal article on an experiment, you may select any topic you choose (even if not discussed in your textbook).  Make sure your journal article is research-based and tests a hypothesis, i.e., it has participants, methods, results and a discussion section. To get all 8 points, be sure to provide the purpose of the research, the hypothesis (or hypothesis) the number of participants, the procedures (what did they do), the results, the limitations of this research, why this research is important and how it relates to the topic you are discussing.  About 500 words should be sufficient.  I am not going to count, and you need not go into great detail, but enough detail so that I can see that you read and understood the article and covered each of these requirements.

Relate the research article you choose to the film and one of the 5 concepts you have selected.  NOTE that you need to choose 5 topics to discuss plus the research article.  Your research article does not count as a topic or concept, rather it has its own points to earn per the rubric below.

As a guide, your paper should be 1,200 to 1,500 words or about 5 double spaced pages.  Try to write succinctly and keep to the page limit. This assignment is worth 20 percent of your total grade for the course (or 40 points).

Please see the tables below for the grading rubric and criteria that will be used to grade your paper. Note that these are the same rubrics that are found in your syllabus.

Additional Criteria for Grading Your Paper

    1.     Accuracy. Are your facts or ideas correct?

    2.     Clarity. Are your answers clear and easy to follow? It helps to read your answer aloud to yourself. Using this method, you can catch incomplete sentences or lapses in your thought.

    3.     Depth. Are the issues and implications thought out and explored?

    4.     Originality. Are your own views present and well-articulated? Use your own words.  Do not copy material directly from your text or other sources. If you want to use the author’s exact words, put them in quotation marks and cite the page number from your text or other source material. But don’t forget to express your own opinion or interpretation.

    5.     Supporting Evidence. Support your ideas with empirical evidence. This is a crucial part of any well-written research essay. You may support your answer with statistical information, case studies, or research you encounter from the text, readings, or other references. You may also use your personal experience as supporting evidence when appropriate.

    6.     References. Did you use appropriate references to support the main points of your paper? You may look in the textbook and find references listed in the bibliography that might support your writing. Be sure you have these references—the complete articles—on hand if you use them. Make sure your references relate to the point you are making, or support your inference.

    7.     Form, composition, spelling, etc. Try to make your paper neat and error free. It helps to run your spell checker before submitting your work, or have a colleague or friend read over your paper.

    8.     APA Style. We will follow the formatting rules of the American Psychological Association. The UMUC Guide to Writing and Research will provide you with some basic APA guidelines, and you can access this information by visiting UMUC’s library web page.
