3. Do thePolyvinylAcetateCrosslinkingLab.Don’tevenattemptto do ituntilyouunderstandthe concept of crosslinking. As thisclassprogresses, thelabsbecome more complex and theexplanations of whatisgoingonis more involved. Youhavetoexplain in thereportthechemistryof what occurred duringtheexperiment.
Making a CrosslinkedPolymer
Thisisthestructure of Polyvinylacetate. Itisthemainingredient in Elmer’sglue. Thisstructurejust shows a smallfraction of whatthismoleculeis. It shows twomonomers. Therealityisthatthischain can be thousands of units of monomerslong.
Glue can do itsjobwhenitdries and thetwosides of whatyou are gluingsticktogether. However, iftherewere a waytocrosslinkthepolymers, a verydifferent material can be formed. Thisis similar totheaction of sulfuronlatex in thefamousprocesscalled ?vulcanization?. Sulfuracts as a bridge betweenthetwopolymerchainsto cause themto be elastic.
In this case, theborateanion (B(OH)4)-1isused as thecrosslinkingagent. There are some links at thebottom of theseinstructionsthatwilltakeyoutosome more in-depthexplanations of whatisgoingon.
Materials:
• Borax – I’vegivenlittlepackets of thistothelabdirectors in Pleasantville and New York, butit’scheap and available in grocerystoreslaundrydept.
• Elmer’swhiteglue
• water
• 2 bowlsorglasses
• largemixingspoon
• foodcoloring, notabsolutelynecessary
?1. Thoroughly mix ½ cup of water and ½ cup of whiteglue (“Elmer’sSchoolGlue”) in a bowl
2. (optional)Add a fewdrops of foodcoloringtothewater/glue mixture, againmixingthoroughly. Thiswill be your “GlueSolution”.
??3. In a separate cup, mix 1/4 cup of water and 1 or 2 teaspoon of “Borax”. Theobjectiveistomake a saturatedBoraxsolution, thatis, one in whichtheBoraxwillnotcontinuetodissolveaftermixing. Thiswill be your “BoraxSolution”. Italsomeansthatitwilldissolvebetter in hotwater. So, youmightboil up a littlewaterfirst and thendissolvetheBorax in it. Letitcoolbeforeyou use itwiththeElmer’sglue.
?4. PourtheBoraxSolutionintoyourGlueSolution, beingpreparedto mix thetwoveryrapidlywith a largespoon.??
