Introduction: There are two parts to an introduction:
• Introducing the topic and the book. So when two people meet for the first time, they introduce each other and then carry on the conversation. Likewise, one should not jump into the topic.
• The second part of course is your thesis statement. This is the position that you will be taking in the essay. It is customary to put the thesis as the last statement of the introduction. The thesis should spell out clearly what you will be arguing in the essay. Try to keep your introduction just a couple of paragraphs. The thesis should be assertive. For example, “The subject of war elicits violent imagery, but the human component is usually untold. Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell examines the human side of war and the stories of individual transformations replete throughout the book.”

Body: This of course is the bulk of your essay and every paragraph should sustain the position of your thesis statement. Be sure to have transitions throughout the paper so that the essay reads smoothly and is seamless. • Never introduce new arguments in the conclusion because this is a sign of weakness.
