Intro to Research in Info Age
1. Fill out the Assignment #3 Submission form, available under the assignment
instructions link on Moodle (under Class 6). Only ONE form is required per group.
Make sure that your form includes the URL link to your Digital Subject Guide
2. Designate one group member to submit the Assignment #3 form to Moodle
(upload the form using the upload link under Class 6 in Moodle.)
Purpose of the assignment:
One of the LIBR 2100 course objectives is to for students to be able to create
information using digital technology and tools. This assignment is intended to
meet that course objective, and incorporate many other skills that we are
developing this term, including: locating and retrieving information sources,
analyzing and critically evaluating information, using and applying information
effectively, selection and use of information tools, creating correct citations using
style manuals, and demonstrating an understanding of the organization of
information systems.
ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION:
• This assignment will be completed in groups of 2 or 3 (you may choose
your own group members)
• As a group, you will create an ONLINE Digital Subject Guide on a topic
of your choice
• Suggested free software: Blogger.com (Google’s Blogspot),
Wordpress.com
• Other suggested tools & sources of information (beside the standard
databases and search engines we will be using in class): Professional
Association websites related to your topic, other library subject guides
related to your topic or resource citation, clustering search engine tools
like Quintura and Carrot2, special Google search engine features, APA
style guides.
PART A: YOUR ONLINE DIGITAL SUBJECT GUIDE MUST CONTAIN:
6 separate pages. One page will be dedicated to each of the following
categories:
Page 1) “About”
This page should provide:
2
i) A brief, one paragraph introduction to your topic;
ii) The purpose of your subject guide (How is your site intended to help
information seekers? Who is your site is intended for? How did you
choose the resources you are featuring? etc.)
iii) Short, one-paragraph bios of each of your group members. These
should include a brief description of each person’s role in building the
subject guide (writing page content, editing, uploading content online using
free software, etc).
Page 2) “Background Information sources”
In this part provide:
Two (2) citations in APA 6th edition format for material that you feel provides a
good introduction to your topic (embed URL links where applicable.) Possible
sources could include encyclopedias (print or online), text books, general books
(i.e, Introduction to Statistics”), other online help guides.
Page 3) “Books”
In this part provide:
i) Two (2) book citations, in APA 6th edition format, for books that you feel are
particularly important or interesting for your topic (embed URL links to e-books
where applicable, or embed links to the database or website record where you
found the book).
ii) The name of two (2) databases that are particularly good for finding books
on your topic. Underneath your databases, write a short paragraph describing
each database. For example: what types of resources are accessible via the
databases, how large is each database (how many records does it contain), and,
if applicable, what platform is it accessed by (EBSCOhost, Web of Knowledge,
Proquest, etc). Be sure to embed the URL link to your databases.
Page 4) “Scholarly Articles”
In this part provide:
i) Three (3) scholarly article citations, in APA 6th edition format, for articles
that you feel are particularly important or interesting for your topic (embed URL
links to articles where possible, or embed links to the database or website record
where you found the article).

ii) The name of two (2) databases that are particularly good for finding articles
on your topic. Underneath your database links, write a short paragraph
describing each database. For example: what types of resources are accessible
via the database, how large are the databases (how many records do they
contain), and, if applicable, what platform is each accessed by (EBSCOhost,
Web of Knowledge, Proquest, etc). Be sure to embed the URL link to your
databases.
Page 5) “Other information resources”
You may choose any resources you like here:
Hard copy documents, webpages, blogs, newspapers, videos, etc. (anything
other than books or scholarly articles)
In this part provide:
i) Three (3) citations in APA 6th edition format, for other information sources
of your choice, that you feel are particularly important or interesting for your
topic (embed URL links to resources where possible, or embed links to the
database or website record where you found the resource).
ii) The name of two (2) databases or search engines or other resources that
are particularly good for finding resources like the ones you have listed.
Underneath your database/search engine link, write a short paragraph describing
the database/search engine/resource. For example: what types of resources are
accessible via the database, how large is the database (how many records it
contains), and, if applicable, what platform is it accessed by (EBSCOhost, Web of
Knowledge, Proquest, etc). Be sure to embed the URL link to your databases or
search engines if applicable.
Page 6) “Database Help Guide”
For this part you will create a Database Help Guide for one of the databases
listed on pages 3-5 of your Subject Research Guide. Your audience is a group of
first-year students. These students may not be familiar with using databases.
Things to keep in mind for your database help guide:
• Maximum length: the equivalent of two typed pages
• Give your guide a title.
• Explain what the database is used for
• Provide a short introduction: 1-3 sentences describing what can be found
in the database.
4
• Provide instructions on how to access the database.
• Show how the database can be searched effectively to find research
material (including a brief demonstration of Boolean searching)
• Visuals usually work best – while text is important, try to keep it to a
minimum. Incorporate screenshots.
• You won’t be able to do everything so you’ll have to prioritize and decide
what is most important to get students started with their research.
• While the guide is intended for other students, part of the assignment is
also to demonstrate to me that you understand how the database works.
PART B: ANNOTATING YOUR “BEST” THREE SOURCES
Choose one “best” source from each of the following pages: Your ‘Books’ page,
“Scholarly Articles” page, and “Other Information Sources”. Defend each of these
three resources as “the best” by providing an annotation for each. This means:
Underneath each of these three citations, you must write a paragraph that
explains the following:
Content: What is the resource about? How is it relevant to you
topic?
Purpose: What is the resource for? Why was it written?
Authority: Is it written and/or edited/published by people that have
the expertise to produce this information?
Accuracy/Reliability: Is the information contained in the resource
accurate? How do you know? Are you provided with ways to find
supporting documentation?
Currency: Is it new/up to date? If not, does this matter for your
topic?
Objectivity: Is information in the resource communicated
objectively? Why or why not?
Arrangement and ease of use: How is the resource organized? Are
there any special features? Can a non-specialist use the resource
(is it easy to read and navigate)?
5
Please make sure that your Digital Subject Guide has the following
characteristics:
i) It’s easy to read, and different sections and paragraphs are spaced
appropriately
ii) Embedded links are working
iii) Creativity: There has been some attempt to customize your Digital
Subject Guide with pictures, background colours, fonts, etc.
Try to use different sources and resources to make your guide the most
helpful it can be (i.e., don’t use Google or Academic Search Premier for
everything!)
