One of the themes throughout this course is for students to explore and discover possible career identities. The Interesting Career Interview assignment builds on your prior explorations about careers and your practice with oral communication skills and helps you look forward to a potential future job or career. By interviewing someone who you believe does something about which you are curious, you can obtain a realistic preview of a possible career path, as well as to begin networking in your desired field. Students are encouraged to begin looking for interviewees EARLY in the semester. [125 points]
NOTE – a student in the class asked for an explanation of the “Writing it up” part a. Introduction and Summary. Here is the explanation I provided for those who might not be clear about what is being asked in this section:
The summary should introduce the person and then summarize the discussion (what were the main ideas that you discussed and how it flowed). It’s not just a list of questions (those are in part b) but more the general ideas.
For example:
“Katie and I talked about the early part of her career and what she thought it would be like in comparison to her actual experience. This topic led us to examine the choices she made in college and she ended up telling me, “‘I really wish I would have majored in Design.’ We also spent some time talking about the plans she has for the next stage of her career: Katie is trying to leverage her contacts so that she can move into the technological side of her company and out of sales.” [then you would go on to say where the interview flowed next and how it concluded.]
The introduction and summary should tell me ABOUT the interview it is NOT a verbatim transcript of the conversation.
