Write an essay comparing and contrasting Alexander Pope’s and Richmond Lattimore’s translations of Book 22 of Homer’s Iliad. What qualities do the two translations share? How do they differ? You are required to cite specific lines of each translation and compare them and explain any differences and similarities, for example comparing technique, alliteration, similes, repetition and tone of each translation. You are required to explain how the differences affect the way you understand the text. Discuss the text itself—what is it about? Why is it compelling to you as a reader?
