In Praise of the Incomplete Leader

In Praise of the Incomplete Leader
As you read in the article titled, “In Praise of the Incomplete Leader,” as team members and team leaders, we all have personal strengths and weaknesses. One of the main objectives of this course is to highlight your potential strengths and weaknesses through providing immediate data-driven feedback reports and a hands-on team experience that draws those strengths and weaknesses into the light. In developing ourselves to be better team members and leaders, the first order of business is to know what our strengths and weaknesses are. Knowing where we stand creates the foundation on which we can work to further improve and capitalize upon our strengths and compensate for our weaknesses. Knowing where we are strongest also helps to inform us of the situations and roles in which we are likely to “shine”; knowing our weaknesses informs us of the situations we may be less successful in and the areas where we might need others to “complete” us.

The purpose of your individual paper is to help you along this journey of self-discovery and development. Using the data provided to you through your personalized feedback reports, content from lecture, readings, and your anecdotal observations and experiences of working in your teams, you will a) identify at least two strengths and two potential weaknesses, and b) chart out a plan for how you will capitalize on your strengths and compensate for your weaknesses in your future career. In achieving parts a and b, you must draw on data, lecture content, and detailed descriptives of your team experiences to support your conclusions. You can also supplement these details by making sense of positive or negative past work experiences in relation to your strengths and weaknesses.

Your individual paper is due at the start of class, April 22, and should be no longer than FIVE (5) pages (1.5 lines-spaced, 1” margins, 12 pt Times New Roman font). Be sure to balance the need to be thorough in covering all your strengths and weaknesses and your development plan. One way to break up the paper is to describe and defend your strengths and weaknesses in 3-4 pages, leaving the last page or so to look forward into the future
