Think about the readings in Week Four. Consider the image of a spider web to illustrate the complexity and prevalence of networks in international relations.
Arquilla makes the argument that IR scholars will likely resist the concept of networks as a way to understand what’s happening in the world. Arquilla suggests that ignoring the rise of networks will lead to more military interventions and will cause states “to focus more on confrontation and co-optation than on embracing this new form of social organization” (Arquilla 2007, 207).
In the short article, “Libya After Qaddafi” (written four years after Arquilla) international law scholar Richard
Falk questions the motives of NATO in responding to the Libyan conflict in 2011 based on the same tensions that
Arquilla examines between state actors and supranational organizations.
Question: In light of ever-expanding network activity, what should be the role of supra-national organizations in crises like the Arab Spring and Libya in 2011? Why?
Answer the question by Thursday at 11:55pm ET. Don’t forget to include references to the Arguilla (2007), Raffo (2007), and Falk (2011) from your readings.
Follow the pattern below in creating your paragraphs. (You should have at least two paragraphs for your answer.)
1. What is your answer to the question? This is your overall main point or thesis. Do not write the thesis until you’ve done the two paragraphs below. Then, taking into account your reasons why, create a thesis statement and place it in the first line of your answer. Try using the word “although” to begin.
2. Give at least two reasons why in support of your answer. (Remember to take yourself out of it. No “I think” or “I believe.” Write in third person as if you are an authority!)
3. Address your first reason why. Write a topic sentence. Provide evidence from the readings. Explain what it means. Next, state why it is important. Then start a new paragraph.
4. Address your second reason why. Write a topic sentence. Provide evidence from the reading. (Don’t forget to use Turabian in-text citations!) Explain what it means. Then state why it is important.
5. Restate your main point and tell your reasons why, including a hint from your evidence.

Research suggests a number of strategies to reduce intergroup conflict. To further explore these strategies, in addition to readings in your text, read the following article paying particular attention to pages 588 to 593.
Hewstone, M., Rubin, M., & Willis, H. (2002). Intergroup bias. Annual Review of Psychology, 53, 575-604.
You are a counselor in a detention center for delinquent adolescent boys. Your current project is to devise a way to reduce intergroup conflict that has been escalating between the boys at the center, many of whom were active in
local gangs.
Discuss in detail the concepts that lead to the intergroup conflict, such as stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination. How have these attitudes and behaviors created and perpetuated the ongoing conflict?
Discuss the different strategies to reduce intergroup conflict found in your text and the Hewstone article.
