How is child disobedience depicted in the set books? Your discussion should refer to three of the set books for Block 4 and the wider reading for this Block.

This question invites you to think about child disobedience in children’s literature, and how it is represented. Your discussion should be based on careful consideration of different examples of a child’s acts of disobedience and any evaluations assigned to such instances, drawing on any three of the Block 4 set books. Some of the questions you could explore include for example: In what kinds of situations are children seen to be disobedient – and by whom? What are the implications of such acts of disobedience? How is child disobedience linked to the transition to adulthood? How is it linked to notions of child agency?

To answer the question you are expected to engage with materials which discuss the books you have selected. There are a number of aspects you could consider including for example language, style, narrative and plot, models of childhood represented or the mixture of realism and fantasy in each of the books in relation to child disobedience.

In terms of the structure of your essay, it is recommended that you present a clear and balanced argument weighing points in support of the claim and points that challenge it and making sure you quote appropriately from both set texts and critical texts.
